Theme Week - Alternate Accessories |
|
Description: I like this idea for a theme. But I've taken very few pictures with real alternate accessories. I can only make exceptions when it really seems necessary, like with this pic of a Techno-Viper who accompanies Range-Vipers into action and wears a uniform colored like theirs.
It's a hangup of mine. For my first few years of playing with GI Joes as a kid, I mixed and matched accessories freely. Most of mine were secondhand anyway so I didn't have all their accessories. But about the time I was 10, something shifted. I started keeping careful track of who had what, and for older figures I looked back at brochures. I made a rule that figures could ONLY use their own accessories, or else accessory pack weapons. This is a silly rule, limiting my play options, but I took it seriously. And it stuck with me as I started taking pictures as an adult. I rarely give a figure accessories it didn't come with, except from an accessory pack (or the generic black accessories that came with TRU 6-packs in later years, I view those as AP weapons available to anyone). It limits my photo ideas, just like it limited my play as a kid. But somehow I can't shake it.

| August 05, 2024, 02:16:35 AM I like the way this looks.
Accessory swapping is one of those things, I can see why some people have the hang up, and I have some of my own, I tend to want whatever swap I do, to at least match in a way. IE: I'll give a Footloose M-16 to Python Patrol Copperhead, because it's the same style of gun as the Leatherneck rifle, but is a better overall accessory. |

| August 03, 2024, 10:33:53 PM I've never been too hung up on swapping out or replacing accessories. It just depends on the character and what I think they need. There are some figures that came with weapons that I would never use, like the multicolored battle corps guns for example. |

I think there's arguments you could make against accessory swaps. One is that it makes it look like you have an incomplete figure, and no one likes looking poor.
Won't lie, I tend to use obscure/rare accessories as swaps to avoid this. I have issues. |

| August 01, 2024, 11:52:42 PM I've never thought about Skullbuster in the context of Techno Vipers. But, it makes perfect sense. And, the gear looks really nice with him. |

Another argument you could make, is that it eliminates the role some figures have in the first place. Why use Roadblock if you could just give Flint his M2?
Still though, there's those clever swaps that really open my eyes to how fun the topic is. Like giving SF Road Pig parts to Blanka. In this case, Skullbuster with Techno-Viper gear is a clever way to reporpose him into another army-builder.
Great posing, and the location with the trees in the background looks really nice. |
