Theme Week - Retail Army builders
Description: 2002 Alley Vipers - red variant.

You guys claimed all the other cool armybuilders I had planned on using this week, so I had to break these out for something different.  I wanted to do this shot outside, but once again I had to shoot indoors first due to rain, and then the farmers spraying chemicals on the crops today sealed the deal.

2002 was the year I first discovered G.I.JOE.  Must have been the tv commercials.  The first thing I bought was the 2 pack of Frostbite and Neo Viper (the t-crotch ones) which I loved at the time.  My first o-ring joes might have been the blue Alley viper and Big Ben 2 pack which I got as a gift at a family Christmas party.  Sadly, I no longer have them, not sure where they went.  Anyway, I never had a chance to armybuild the blue alley viper.  By the time I had been bit by the armybuilding bug I think most of them were being hoarded up by the older collectors.  Somehow, I ended up with 5 of these red ones instead.  If I remember correctly, I found the first 2 loose at a toy show, then I got 2 more cheap from ebay, and then finally found the last one at a show, I think.  While not as memorable as the blue version, I like the red with urban camo combo.

Unfortunately, a couple of these are now starting to yellow, which upsets me, but these guys did serve me well over the years.

Great shot. I like the Red Alley Viper a lot. The 92 mold was superior to the 89, and I'll never say otherwise.

Bummer about the rain and chemicals, seems like it won't quit raining here either.

Also, that's the first I've heard of the red ones turning, that sucks. It seemed like for a while they were holding out better than the blue ones, but I think eventually all of the 2000's Joes are going to be dingy looking. The plasticizer or something in them just doesn't hold up.

Fantastic shot here Scarr, besides those amazing walls I really like the subtle touches here, like the purple light in the background. Also, good choice leaving the shield off the one in the center: it's nice seeing the figure's details rather than have them always covered up.

These guys and purple Vipers were shortpacked at one per case.  They weren't hard to find at the time.  But, for some reason, most guys just bought one or two and had them be the "leaders" of the more common blue versions.

I love the garbage in the foreground.
