Description: I got this Playmobil pine tree and wanted to try it out. Airborne came to mind because of the comic story in the High Sierras around Snake Eyes's cabin. I think Airborne plays an outsized role because he's one of the few joes available in 1983 with a normal rifle. Most of them had either heavy weapons (machine gun, mortar, bazooka, grenade launcher, laser rifle, etc), small pistol-type weapons (uzi, crossbow) or no firearm at all (mine detector, stretcher, speargun, etc). That left only a few who could be the backbone of a team: Grunt, Stalker, and Airborne. I wasn't collecting in 83, but later I had a kick of trying to only use my secondhand 83 figures together with each other, and this limitation made Airborne very important.

That's a cool tree. Airborne's gun is pretty good, the bayonet makes it stand out. | |

That's a really good point, and also something I noticed about the early Joe line: It seemed like Hasbro placed a big focus on every figure having a unique gun as opposed to a practical one. It definitely made the figures stand apart and seem more unique, though it also meant needing accessory packs to get spares of a favorite gun.
I dig the Playmobil tree. It's hard to make or find a decent 1/18 scale pine tree. |
