Hello Guest

The Zealous Apostate
Description: I got Mercer from a friend for my 10th birthday & instantly thought he was cool - just from his Arnold Schwarzenegger-esq head sculpt. It was only recently that I’ve really begun to appreciate (& relate to) his character. He’s a guy who joined up with a certain group of people because from the outside, it seemed fun, exciting, & potentially prosperous. However, after being on the inside of that circle for awhile, he begins to see that they/it weren’t all they appeared to be & that their philosophies & practices didn’t align with his own. He had to choose- and his moral compass pointed him to stealing a Moray & bouncing on Cobra’s business plan. He’s rapidly moved up the list of my personal favorite characters to join Storm Shadow, Covergirl, Hawk, & Stalker in that special handful of personalities.

Mercer is a figure that never really resonated with me. I think it's because I could never figure out what he reminded me of. Turns out it's Jack Burton.

The whole traitor aspect is cool, but not something I ever did anything with!

I feel the same. If they wanted to give us a bit bulkier mortar man with more in-depth accessories, why not just call him Short-Fuze V2? .

'89 seems like a rehash year since Downtown could have been Short Fuze, Backblast could have been Zap, Scoop could have been Breaker and Recoil could easily have been Grunt.  I've often wondered if something like that was the original intent and they got cold feet and just went with updates for super popular characters.  (Oh, and Deep Six.)

I think with the line you have to strike the right balance between updating old characters and introducing new ones that have something different to offer.

I’ve found that with most things “medium is best”. I agree that for the original run of the toy/comic to last 13 years like they did, then 13 or even 25 Joes would’ve spread things too thin & gotten redundant by year 5 or 6. The other extreme of a roster hovering around (seemingly) 250 including drivers & other factions seemed like a bit too many “balls to keep in the air at once” to me personally. I always felt like if they ‘trimmed the fat’ down to about 75 Joes and 50 Cobras/Dreadnocks for around 125 total, that would be ideal - it’d have put it at just about 1 new character to learn about/incorporate into the mix,  per new issue of the Marvel run.

Mercer has a lot of potential as a character.

As ARAH went on, I feel like we saw a lot less of the excellent characters that made the line shine at first, instead getting a bunch of regurgitated do-overs like Downtown.

Hawk, Stalker, Scarlett, Rock N Roll, Gung-Ho, Roadblock, Clutch, and Zap got 2. Even Sci-Fi got 2, which should’ve just been Flash V2 & V3 IMO.

Thanks on the drydrofoil too😁 I figured Cobra would have them up out of the water like that until called on- similar to how the Empire stores their TIEs.

Love the dry docked Moray, great idea. Excellent pose with his gun too.

Mercer is one of, if not my favorite 1987 Joe. A large part of that is because the character like you mentioned. As ARAH went on, I feel like we saw a lot less of the excellent characters that made the line shine at first, instead getting a bunch of regurgitated do-overs like Downtown. Like Snake Eyes, Stalker and other classics, Mercer's background gives him an actual story, which really helps the figure out.
