Scramble the Wolves! (Theme Week - Scrap Iron) |
|
Description: Hopefully I'll have time to get Scrap Iron out for some fresh photos this week, but if not, here's one from a couple years ago. Scrap Iron is a fun figure, and he was a favorite as a kid. I've always preferred to use him as a private contractor of destruction, like he seemed to be in the cartoon and comics, rather than as Destro's right-hand man like the file card specified. It opens up a lot more opportunities to use him, and makes him beholden to no one, which keeps him as a wild card in Cobra power struggles, much like Firefly, Zartan and Major Bludd.

That's a fun mix of figures! It's funny what sticks in our heads for certain characters versus what doesn't. Zartan's filecard always stuck in my head and gave me a strong impression of him, but I really don't remember Scrap Iron's filecard at all. I think the only really memorable thing in Scrap Iron's bio is the "Imperfection in any form repels and disgusts him. Perhaps that's why he wants to blow up the world." quote. Dark stuff for a kid's toyline.
Ice vipers and v2 snow serpents pair up so nicely.
Anyway, I'll admit Scrap Iron is a character that for whatever reason has never really got much use in my collection. There's nothing really wrong with his figure or character, he just gets overlooked I suppose. I was surprised by how much I liked v2 Snow Serpent when I first got him. I still prefer the 85 figure, but the 91 version provides some nice variety and, like you say, goes well with the Ice Vipers.
I think Scrap Iron's obscurity has a lot to do with the quality of the other 1984 Cobras. Firefly, Storm Shadow, Zartan and the Baroness are all top tier, and Wild Weasel came with one of the most iconic vehicles. That kind of leaves Scrap Iron, Copperhead and the Stinger driver overshadowed IMO. It probably doesn't help that Scrap Iron didn't get much use in the cartoon (one regular episode and two miniseries) and didn't even show up in the comics until 1986.
