Very cool setup, it's so weird seeing these later year figures in a shot by you.

So many post 1984 figures.  What happened to you?
Sea Slug wasn't in the comics, so he's not canon. No, really I remember where there were schmucks who were that uptight. "Was TARGAT in the comic, cuz I'm a comics guy, blah-blah..."

Early Joe fandom was bad in so many ways.  I only collect the "real" Joes from '82 - '87.  Except Shockwave and Hit and Run because they're "real military".  At least some of that's gone...

I think a lot of people went through phases with their collecting.  Some just preferred the more realistic figures (which is fine), while others liked to pretend that certain years didn't exist and thus overlooked a lot of gems.  I'll admit I was influenced at first by some of the online sentiments from the earlier years.  For example it took me awhile to appreciate a lot of the pre 85 Joes because I thought they seemed "dated" compared to the what came a few years later.  Now I love them.  But I also early on had an appreciation for some of the previously more obscure characters, especially from the 90's.  I credit that to how these figures were used on some of the fan sites I encountered back in the day.

This shot makes me feel really nostalgic for some reason. I think it's because there's a wide variety of Cobras, but relatively few army-builders, which is how a lot of my play times were as a kid. You nailed the posing, too!

That's something that gets lost in the army building focus of adult collecting, the mindset of adult fans and the bashing of unpopular characters.  "Why would _____ go this mission?" question an adult fan would ask. And as a kid, they would go because we probably didn't have all these troops. Even Hama summed up the use of unrealistic characters in the comic as "You have to go on patrol even if your squad is full of losers" or something like that.

Even leader characters, why would Cobra Commander put himself at risk in battle?  But every story he did was better for it, both on the comic and the cartoon.

No one does group shots like RTG.  The posing and clarity is amazing.

Nice! Lots of people there with a buried freighter in their future. As I recall Tomax and Xamot disappeared from the comic from this point until they showed up leading the invasion of Benzheen (maybe Larry Hama belatedly realized he hadn't left CC with enough lackeys?) I wonder what they were up to.

Haha!

Honestly, I spent 15 goddamn years solely focused on 82-84, it was time to branch out on figures and vehicles.

Yeah, the orthodoxies of the early 2000s were nuts, I mean, I can't really talk too much trash, considering I was almost dogmatic in my "early years only" collecting habits, but that's just the way things go. In a way I kind of miss the Cartoon vs. Comic dividing lines, because it at least showed some willingness to take positions. One of the biggest issues I had with the mid 2000s hellscape that was G.I. Joe fandumb, was the  follower mentality that developed. I don't think anyone at Hasbro reading a message board was going to be losing sleep if people didn't like New Sculpts, but that seemed to be a fear back then.
