Description: When I first got into Joes, the 89s and 90s were both on the shelves and in the catalogs. Even as I became aware of the different years, I didn't differentiate these, I just thought of them as "89-90s." They had a lot in common, and when the 1991s came out I could tell there was a shift. Obviously I played with them all together, but the "89-90s" and the 91s were in different categories in my head. But recently, for some reason, I've started to get much more interested in pictures putting 88s with 89s, and 90s with 91s. Like here.

Sometimes I can use a mix of figures from different years, it depends on what they are I suppose.
Very cool use of the toxo lab, great setup and shot. | |

I really like the mix of figures here.
With time, I've found myself unable to really mix years, that weren't released in the same timeframe. Some figures, like the 1985 Flint or the '87 Falcon are pretty timeless, so they mesh well with anyone, but the Decimator is going to look a tad out of place beside a Tele-Viper. | |

I'm also pretty fascinated by figures that were on the market together. It's a little odd, because as a kid I definitely kept playing with my 89s and 90s even while I was adding 93s to my collection, and I used them all together. Plus, I acquired stuff secondhand so I remember using things like the Bridgelayer, Flagg, WHALE, and 83 HQ with my 90s figures. But now I appreciate seeing how each period fits together and has its own logic. Unfortunately, and I think this is something I regretted as a kid, 92-93 aren't as self-contained as earlier years. Despite there being lots of figures, they're mostly combat commando types, with fewer of the support roles that the earlier years had (the weapon trees don't help with this; everybody gets weapons but there's no room for radios, stretchers, mine detectors, weird energy devices, etc.) And for vehicles, if you want a helicopter for your 92-93 Joes, you have to go back to the Retaliator. If you want a winter vehicle, you have to go back to the Avalanche. 94 was better at covering the bases--for example, the Razorblade and Blockbuster filled those holes, and they made Lifeline with some specialized medic accessories. | |

I never realized the green on the Toxo-Lab was a perfect match for the green on the Hammerhead. That's an interesting pairing!
I think years ago I used to be more prone to photographing figures from a eclectic mix of years, but in recent times I've gotten more focused on contemporary figures. For me, that's partly because I've never seen '93 guys used together like you would with '85 and '86 figures, where '93's and '94's tend to just get cherry-picked and tossed in with stronger figures from earlier years. |
